8 But I say to the unmarried and to widows that it is good for them if they remain even as I. 9 But if they do not have self-control, let them marry; for it is better to marry than to burn with passion. 1 Corinthians 7:8-9 NASB
In verse 8 there are two groups of people and they are both in a state of not having a spouse
Before I go into verse 8 proper still in verse 7 I think Barrett in his writing talks about the ‘men ’ of Corinth who have a lack of self-control. I think these verses should refer to both sexes. The word χήρα means widow. A widow is a female person who has lost her husband. For stylistic purposes I think even though Paul says I wish all men were like me, it is obviously referring to him but then he uses ‘each one’ which must also include women in the meaning. Otherwise why use widow and not widower? Feminist theology here would have a point but I wouldn’t push it
