So what is my reflection before we start?
In the West we think of Israel and the Church as separate entities. in Pauls time however, Judaism had many branches. Christ prophesied the temple would be destroyed in 70 ad. As time went on after ad 70 more gentiles came into the church, the Jewish sector became smaller until there was a clear split. Even up to the time of Justin Martyr there wasn’t a clear split. There will always be a link between Judaism and Christianity because we share the same Old Testament. There were those who wanted to split the Old Testament from the New Testament such as Marcion but fortunately this failed.
Why am I saying all of this? As Christians let us cherish the Old Testament as we really do need to learn from our shared history. Paul is stating here to prepare our hearts for the Thanksgiving meal (Holy Communion/ breaking of bread) next chapter with Holy. It is encouraging for us as Christians that the Corinthians were ordinary folk who had the same type of problems that we have. There hearts like our hearts need to be prepared. Let us allow the Holy Spirit to work in our hearts and minds to be conformed in the image and likeness of Jesus Christ.
