³ Then the LORD said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever,  because he also is flesh; nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.” Genesis 6:3

People were that evil on the earth that a judgement was on its way.  God is merciful and compassionate but there can come a time when enough is enough.  The Holy Spirit spoke before the great judgement of Noah and the whole earth was going to be under water.  God always leaves a remnant (His elect) this too is a mystery.  As a sign later on God gave the rainbow for all to see.  This signifies God’s mercy and love to Man and His creation.   Even as the ark (ship of safety) represented safety so Christ is our Ark (safety ) and whoever flees to Him will be saved.
